Why is this hard to memorize?
Functional groups are the heart of organic chemistry — they determine reactivity, naming, and properties. For NEET and JEE, you need to know the priority order (for IUPAC naming), structures, and typical reactions of each group. The priority order from highest to lowest is: –COOH > –SO₃H > –COOR > –COX > –CONH₂ > –CHO > –CO– > –OH > –NH₂ > –C≡C– > –C=C–. Getting this priority wrong means wrong IUPAC names on the exam. A mnemonic that captures both the group and its rank is invaluable.

Read in order: Carboxylic acid → Sulphonic acid → Ester → Acid halide → Amide → Aldehyde → Ketone → Alcohol → Amine → Alkyne → Alkene. The Hindi "Sochta hai Kya" (thinks what) connects them.
