Why is this hard to memorize?
The first ten alkanes — Methane through Decane — form the backbone of organic chemistry nomenclature. Every IUPAC name you will ever write starts with one of these prefixes: meth-, eth-, prop-, but-, pent-, hex-, hept-, oct-, non-, dec-. Each word's first letter matches the alkane prefix. Two sentences of 4+6 words for a natural break at Butane.

After Pentane, the names come from Greek/Latin numbers (5-10), so many students just memorize the first five with a Hindi sentence and then count the rest.
