What is a mnemonic?
A mnemonic is a memory trick that helps you remember a list or sequence by associating each item with a simple cue — like the first letter of each word. For example, "My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nachos" helps you remember the planets in order: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune.
How does this tool work?
Enter your topic and list of items. The tool generates three types of memory aids:
- Acronym — combines the first letters into a short word or letter sequence you can memorize
- Acrostic sentence — creates a memorable sentence where each word starts with the first letter of each item
- Mapping table — shows exactly which cue letter maps to which item, so you can quiz yourself
Tips for effective mnemonics
- The funnier or more vivid the sentence, the easier it sticks
- Say it out loud 3 times after generating
- Use the "Test yourself" section to practice recall
- Create your own variations — personalised mnemonics are stronger
