Why is this hard to memorize?
This last NCERT Class 12 chapter is pure definitions and examples — which drug class treats pain, which fights bacteria, which neutralises stomach acid — plus a comparison of soaps and detergents and a list of artificial sweeteners. Because there's no reaction mechanism to derive it from, every mark here depends on rote recall, so the exam risk is purely mixing up similar-sounding categories like antipyretic vs antibiotic, or antiseptic vs disinfectant.
Classic mnemonics you should know
"Pain? → Analgesic (Aspirin). Fever? → Antipyretic (Paracetamol). Bacteria INSIDE the body? → Antibiotic (Penicillin). Germs on SKIN/wound? → Antiseptic (Dettol, applied to living tissue). Germs on FLOOR/surface? → Disinfectant (same chemical, higher conc., used on non-living surfaces, e.g. phenol)."
Walking through a doctor's cabinet by SYMPTOM (pain → fever → internal infection → external wound → surface cleaning) gives each drug class a distinct trigger, so you never confuse an antiseptic (used ON the body) with a disinfectant (used on objects/floors) again.
"Antacid = ANTI + ACID (neutralises excess stomach acid, e.g. sodium bicarbonate, ranitidine). Antihistamine = ANTI + HISTAMINE (blocks allergy-causing histamine, e.g. cetirizine)."
Both names literally describe their target — an antacid works AGAINST excess ACID, an antihistamine works AGAINST HISTAMINE (the allergy chemical). No memory trick needed once you read the compound word literally.
"Soap FAILS in hard water (forms scum with Ca²⁺/Mg²⁺ ions). Detergent WINS in hard water (works fine, since its sulphonate/sulphate group doesn't form insoluble salts with Ca²⁺/Mg²⁺)."
The single most-tested distinction between soap and detergent is hard-water behaviour: soap is a fatty-acid salt that reacts with hard-water ions to form a scummy precipitate, while synthetic detergents don't have this problem — which is exactly why detergents were invented.

What is the difference between an antiseptic and a disinfectant?
Both kill or inhibit the growth of microorganisms, but antiseptics are mild enough to be applied to living tissue (like a wound or skin), while disinfectants are too strong for living tissue and are used only on inanimate objects and surfaces, like floors.
Why do soaps not work well in hard water?
Soaps are sodium or potassium salts of long-chain fatty acids. In hard water, these react with calcium and magnesium ions to form an insoluble scum (precipitate), which wastes soap and leaves a residue.
