Essential Amino Acids — Chemistry Mnemonic
Target: mnemonic for essential amino acids chemistry biology
Why is this hard to memorize?
There are 9 essential amino acids that the human body cannot synthesize and must obtain from diet: Histidine, Isoleucine, Leucine, Lysine, Methionine, Phenylalanine, Threonine, Tryptophan, and Valine. NEET tests these in both Chemistry (biomolecules chapter) and Biology (nutrition). JEE may ask about their structures or properties. The word "essential" specifically means "must come from food" — all other amino acids can be made by the body. A reliable mnemonic prevents the common mistake of confusing essential with non-essential amino acids.
Classic mnemonics you should know
"PVT TIM HALL — Phenylalanine, Valine, Threonine, Tryptophan, Isoleucine, Methionine, Histidine, Arginine*, Leucine, Lysine"
Private Tim Hall is the most famous mnemonic worldwide. *Note: Arginine is semi-essential (essential only in children). If your exam counts 9, drop Arginine; if it counts 10, keep it.
"FILM VaTH Lip — Phe, Ile, Leu, Met, Val, Thr, His, Lys, Trp"
F(Phe) I(Ile) L(Leu) M(Met) Va(Val) T(Thr) H(His) Li(Lys) p(Trp). "FILM VaTH Lip" — imagine watching a film about a lip.
"These Letters Must Help: I Like Proteins Very Truly — T L M H I L P V T"
Threonine, Leucine, Methionine, Histidine, Isoleucine, Lysine, Phenylalanine, Valine, Tryptophan. Two T's, two L's — remember the doubles.
The complete list
- Histidine (His)
- Isoleucine (Ile)
- Leucine (Leu)
- Lysine (Lys)
- Methionine (Met)
- Phenylalanine (Phe)
- Threonine (Thr)
- Tryptophan (Trp)
- Valine (Val)
Frequently asked questions
What is the most popular mnemonic for essential amino acids?
"PVT TIM HALL" — Phenylalanine, Valine, Threonine, Tryptophan, Isoleucine, Methionine, Histidine, (Arginine), Leucine, Lysine. If your exam counts only 9 essential AAs, drop Arginine (it's semi-essential).
What does "essential" mean for amino acids?
"Essential" means the human body cannot synthesize these amino acids from scratch — they must be obtained from food (protein intake). The other 11 amino acids are "non-essential" because the body can make them from other molecules. This does not mean non-essential AAs are unimportant!
Which amino acid is the only one with an indole ring?
Tryptophan. It has a unique indole (benzene + pyrrole fused ring) side chain. Tryptophan is also the precursor to serotonin and melatonin. Its indole ring makes it the largest essential amino acid and the one that absorbs UV light at 280nm — used in protein quantification.
