Why is this hard to memorize?

Sulphur has more allotropes than almost any other element, and NEET/JEE focus on three main crystalline forms: Rhombic sulphur (α-sulphur, S₈ crown, stable below 95.6°C), Monoclinic sulphur (β-sulphur, S₈, stable between 95.6°C and 119°C), and Plastic sulphur (amorphous, long chains, formed by quenching molten S). The transition temperature of 95.6°C between α and β forms is a classic exam question. You also need to know that all crystalline forms contain S₈ puckered ring molecules, and that the viscosity of liquid sulphur increases dramatically at ~200°C due to ring opening and chain formation.

Classic mnemonics you should know

The Temperature Zones
"Below 96°C = Rhombic(α). 96-119°C = Monoclinic(β). Quenched = Plastic"

Remember 96°C as the transition temperature. Below → Rhombic (most stable, default form). Above → Monoclinic. If you cool molten sulphur rapidly → Plastic (amorphous, rubbery).

The α-β Rule
"α(alpha) = Rhombic = Room temperature. β(beta) = Better at higher temp (Monoclinic)"

α for "at room temp" (default stable form). β for "beyond 96°C" (stable at higher temperature). Both contain S₈ rings — only the crystal packing differs.

The S₈ Crown
"S₈ = 8 sulphur atoms in a crown/puckered ring — like a royal crown with 8 points"

All crystalline sulphur allotropes contain S₈ crown-shaped (puckered) rings. The molecule looks like a king's crown from the side. This S₈ unit is the building block — allotropes differ only in how these crowns pack together.

What is the transition temperature of sulphur allotropes?

95.6°C. Below this, rhombic (α) sulphur is the thermodynamically stable form. Above 95.6°C, monoclinic (β) sulphur is stable. At 119°C, monoclinic melts. This transition temperature is a frequently asked number in NEET and JEE.

Why does liquid sulphur become viscous at 200°C?

Below 160°C, liquid sulphur contains S₈ rings (low viscosity). Around 200°C, the S₈ rings break open and polymerize into long Sₙ chains. These tangled chains increase viscosity dramatically. Above 200°C, the chains start breaking into smaller fragments, and viscosity decreases again.

How is plastic sulphur made?

Heat sulphur above 200°C until it becomes very viscous (dark brown), then pour it into cold water. The rapid cooling (quenching) freezes the long-chain structure before it can crystallize back into S₈ rings. The result is an amorphous, elastic, rubber-like material — plastic sulphur.
