Why is Oxygen different from Sulphur despite being in the same group?
Oxygen has no d-orbitals, so it cannot expand its octet beyond 2 bonds + 2 lone pairs. Its small size leads to strong pπ–pπ bonding (O=O double bond), while Sulphur prefers single bonds and can form SF₆ with expanded octet. Oxygen is also more electronegative (3.5 vs 2.5).
How does the acidity of Group 16 hydrides change for NEET?
Acidity increases down the group: H₂O < H₂S < H₂Se < H₂Te. This is because the H–E bond gets weaker as atomic size increases, making it easier to release H⁺. But H₂O has the highest boiling point due to strong hydrogen bonding.
