Solubility Rules
These rules predict whether most common ionic compounds dissolve in water at 25 °C. Memorize them in order — earlier rules take priority.
- All common sodium (Na+), potassium (K+), and ammonium (NH4+) salts are soluble.
- All nitrates (NO3−) are soluble.
- All acetates (CH3COO−) are soluble.Exception: Silver acetate (AgCH3COO) is slightly soluble.
- All chlorides (Cl−), bromides (Br−), and iodides (I−) are soluble.Exceptions: AgCl, AgBr, AgI, PbCl2, PbBr2, PbI2 are insoluble. (Hg2Cl2, Hg2Br2, Hg2I2 also insoluble.)
- All sulfates (SO42−) are soluble.Exceptions: BaSO4, PbSO4 are insoluble. CaSO4 and SrSO4 are slightly soluble.
- Most hydroxides (OH−) are insoluble.Exceptions: NaOH, KOH, Ba(OH)2 are soluble. Ca(OH)2 is slightly soluble.
- Most carbonates (CO32−), phosphates (PO43−), and sulfides (S2−) are insoluble.Exceptions: Those of Na+, K+, NH4+ are soluble.
- Most chromates (CrO42−) are insoluble.Exceptions: Na2CrO4, K2CrO4, (NH4)2CrO4 are soluble. CaCrO4 is slightly soluble.
