Adsorption: substance accumulates on the surface. Absorption: substance penetrates into the bulk. Sponge absorbs water (goes inside). Charcoal adsorbs gases (on surface). The combined term is "sorption."

How do I distinguish physisorption from chemisorption in exam questions?
Key differences: Physisorption has low enthalpy (20-40 kJ/mol), is reversible, non-specific, multi-layered, and increases at low temperature. Chemisorption has high enthalpy (80-240 kJ/mol), is irreversible, specific to surface, monolayer only, and may increase then decrease with temperature (needs activation energy).
What is the Tyndall effect?
When light passes through a colloidal solution, particles scatter the light, making the beam visible (like a laser beam in fog). True solutions don't show this because solute particles are too small to scatter light. Suspensions scatter too much and appear opaque. The Tyndall effect is the test for colloids.
What causes coagulation of colloids?
Colloidal particles carry charge (electrical double layer) that keeps them dispersed by mutual repulsion. Adding an electrolyte neutralizes this charge → particles aggregate and settle. The more the charge of the coagulating ion, the more effective it is (Hardy-Schulze rule): Al³⁺ coagulates faster than Na⁺ for a negative colloid.
