Why is this hard to memorize?
Polyatomic ions appear everywhere in chemistry — from balancing equations to predicting solubility to naming compounds. You need to know the formula AND charge of each ion: sulphate (SO₄²⁻), nitrate (NO₃⁻), carbonate (CO₃²⁻), phosphate (PO₄³⁻), permanganate (MnO₄⁻), dichromate (Cr₂O₇²⁻), and many more. NEET and JEE assume you have these memorized — they don't give you the formulas. The "ate" suffix generally means more oxygen, "ite" means less oxygen (SO₄²⁻ = sulphate, SO₃²⁻ = sulphite). A systematic approach to memorizing these saves hundreds of marks across exams.
Classic mnemonics you should know
"Sulphate SO₄²⁻ / Sulphite SO₃²⁻ — "-ate" = more O, "-ite" = less O"
The -ate form always has one more oxygen than the -ite form: NO₃⁻/NO₂⁻, SO₄²⁻/SO₃²⁻, ClO₃⁻/ClO₂⁻. The charge stays the same. Memorize the -ate form and subtract one O for -ite.

Group by charge: Monovalent anions (−1), Divalent (−2), Trivalent (−3). Most common polyatomic ions are −1 or −2. Only phosphate and a few others are −3.

Frequently asked questions
How do I remember the charge on polyatomic ions?
Use the "Nick the Camel" approach or group by charge. Most -ate ions with a non-metal + oxygen are -1 (nitrate, chlorate) or -2 (sulphate, carbonate, chromate). Phosphate is the main -3 ion. Ammonium (NH₄⁺) is the most common polyatomic cation (+1).
What is the difference between -ate, -ite, per-, and hypo-?
For chlorine oxyanions: ClO⁻ = hypochlorite (least O), ClO₂⁻ = chlorite, ClO₃⁻ = chlorate, ClO₄⁻ = perchlorate (most O). The prefixes hypo- (under) and per- (above) extend the -ite/-ate series. The charge stays -1 throughout.
Why is ammonium the only common polyatomic cation?
NH₄⁺ forms because nitrogen has a lone pair that can accept a proton (H⁺), forming a fourth N–H bond with a positive charge. Most other polyatomic species have electronegative atoms (O, S) that attract electrons, making them anions. NH₄⁺ behaves like an alkali metal ion in many reactions.
