Why does Carbon show catenation but Lead does not?
Carbon has a small atomic radius and high C–C bond energy (~348 kJ/mol), so long chains are stable. As you go down to Lead, the M–M bond energy drops drastically and the large atomic size weakens overlap, making catenation negligible.
What is the inert pair effect in Group 14?
The 6s² electrons of Lead are reluctant to participate in bonding, so Pb²⁺ is far more stable than Pb⁴⁺. This is why PbO₂ is a strong oxidizing agent (it wants to become Pb²⁺). In contrast, Carbon almost always shows +4.
