Why is this hard to memorize?

In chemistry, you frequently convert between: atm↔Pa, L↔m³, °C↔K, g↔kg, eV↔J, cal↔J. Knowing these conversions and using them correctly in formulas like PV=nRT or E=hν is essential for avoiding silly mistakes.

These five conversions handle 90% of unit problems in chemistry exams. Remember: atm→Pa (multiply by ~10⁵), °C→K (add 273), cal→J (multiply by ~4.2).

Use 8.314 when energy is in Joules and volume in m³. Use 0.0821 when pressure is in atm and volume in litres. Use 2 (approximate) when energy is in calories. Matching R to your units prevents errors.

Frequently asked questions
When should I use R = 8.314 vs R = 0.0821?
Match R to your units: If P is in Pa (or N/m²) and V in m³ → R = 8.314 J/(mol·K). If P is in atm and V in litres → R = 0.0821 L·atm/(mol·K). If energy is in cal → R ≈ 2 cal/(mol·K). Using the wrong R gives an answer off by a factor of ~100.
How do I convert between Celsius and Kelvin?
K = °C + 273.15 (or +273 for quick calculations). Kelvin is the SI unit — all gas law and thermodynamics calculations must use Kelvin. Common trap: forgetting to convert °C to K in PV=nRT or ΔG=ΔH−TΔS gives completely wrong answers.
